Local things worth knowing this week in Lennox & Addington.

Good afternoon, L&A.

This week: local markets are back, Napanee has comics and garden events, Amherst Island is in lilac season, and a rare Napanee River waterfront home has an open house this weekend.

Also, last week’s poll results are in, and readers were very clear: when it comes to local markets, fresh food and baked goods are the big draw.

The weekend may be a little grey, but there are still plenty of local reasons to get out.

What’s Happening This Week

L&A Chamber Market Saturdays

Saturday, May 23
9:00 AM to 1:00 PM
Market Square, Napanee

Market Saturdays are back in Napanee with fresh locally grown produce and fruit when available, homemade baked goods and breads, sweet treats, honey, jams, preserves, home decor, handcrafted items, and rotating vendors throughout the season.

Given last week’s poll results, this one feels especially well-timed. Apparently, the people have spoken, and the people would like bread.

L&A Gardeners Annual Plant Sale

Saturday, May 23
9:00 AM to 2:00 PM
Macpherson House, Napanee

If your garden needs a little help after the spring we’ve had, this is a good one to check out.

The sale will feature vegetables, herbs, perennials, and advice from local gardening folks who actually know what survives around here.

Napanee Comicon

Saturday, May 23
10:00 AM to 3:00 PM
Best & Bash Arena, Napanee

A small community comic-con is coming to Napanee with vendors selling toys, comic books, games, trading cards, and more.

The event also supports the local community through a food bank collection and donation giveaway incentive. A good stop for collectors, families, and anyone who has ever said, “I’m just going to look,” before coming home with something.

Pollination Celebration at the Museum

Saturday, May 23
1:00 PM to 3:30 PM
Museum of Lennox & Addington, Napanee
Cost: Free

The Museum is hosting a family-friendly afternoon all about pollinators, with hands-on activities, live demonstrations, garden activities, and tips on making your own garden more pollinator-friendly.

Bring a blanket or lawn chair if you plan to stay a while.

Lilac Forest Walkabout

Saturday, May 23 and Sunday, May 24
11:00 AM to 6:30 PM
Rossland Gardens, Amherst Island

For a short stretch each spring, the lilacs on Amherst Island become a proper local outing.

The Lilac Forest Walkabout is back this weekend at Rossland Gardens, with visitors able to wander the grounds and take in the blooms at their own pace.

House of the Week

99 River Road, Greater Napanee

99 River Road, Greater Napanee

$999,000 • 3 bed • 4 bath • Napanee River waterfront

This week’s House of the Week is a rare one: a Napanee River waterfront home being offered for sale for the first time.

Set on River Road, the property has the kind of local appeal that tends to make people slow down and look twice: river frontage, mature surroundings, and a setting that feels tucked away while still being close to town. Inside, the home offers three bedrooms, four bathrooms, generous living space, and plenty of room for hosting, family visits, or simply enjoying a quieter pace by the water.

Open House: Saturday, May 23 and Sunday, May 24
Time: 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM both days

A good one to check out if you’re seriously looking, casually dreaming, or just being nosy in the most respectable L&A way.

Local Help Wanted

Tamworth Hardware Store

A longtime local business could use a few extra hands.

Tamworth Hardware Store is looking for part-time or full-time help. If you know someone nearby who is friendly, reliable, handy, or just looking for steady local work close to home, this could be worth passing along.

It’s always good to see local businesses hiring, and even better when the right person can find work right here in the community.

Reader Poll

Last week, we asked what would make you most likely to check out a local market.

The answer was pretty clear:

Fresh food and baked goods won by a landslide, with 72% of the vote.

Here’s how it landed:

Fresh food and baked goods: 72%
Local makers and handmade items: 14%
Live music or family activities: 7%
A market close to home: 3%
I just like wandering around: 3%

A few readers also wrote in with specific things they’d love to see more often, including local honey, gluten-free options, sugar-free options, and handmade items.

So if any local market vendors are reading this: apparently, the path to L&A’s heart may involve bread, honey, and a good butter tart.

This week, we’re switching from markets to homes.

House of the Week has become a reader favourite in L&A Loop. This week, we’re curious: do local listings and open houses make the newsletter more useful, or just more fun to browse?

Sunday, May 31
10:00 AM to 2:00 PM
Newburgh Community Hall

A reader shared this local fundraiser coming up in Newburgh as part of the Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides.

The national walk supports Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides, helping provide specially trained dog guides to Canadians living with disabilities. The local event will include a charity BBQ, raffles and prizes, a vendor market, and more.

A nice local event to mark on the calendar if you want to support a cause that can make a real difference, close to home and across Canada.
