Good evening, L&A!

A flashlight, a bicycle or a pair of skates could come in handy this weekend. Wynn Farms’ moonlight maze is open tonight and Saturday, Flinton’s Tall Pines Ride heads into the autumn countryside tomorrow, and Amherstview is celebrating with free swimming and skating on Sunday.

There’s also an early turkey dinner in Tamworth, one last Market Saturday in Napanee and a House of the Week listed just below $400,000. Plus, meet Cathy Lynn Brooks, an author who now calls Amherstview home.

WHAT’S HAPPENING

Tonight, Friday, October 2 and Saturday, October 3 | Open until 10 p.m.
Wynn Farms, 8191 Highway 33, Greater Napanee

Bring a flashlight and see how your sense of direction holds up after sunset. Wynn Farms’ moonlight maze makes a different kind of Friday or Saturday night out.

Prefer a daytime visit? There’s apple and pumpkin picking too, but those areas close before dusk.

Maze admission: $10.62 for ages 13+ and $6.19 for ages 2–12, plus tax. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult. No reservations are required.

Saturday, October 3 | Check-in 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.; ride starts at 10:30 a.m.
L&A Forest Trails, 100 John Street, Flinton

The Tall Pines Ride follows a 45-kilometre loop through forest trails and gravel country roads in Addington Highlands, with rest stops, local treats and live music along the way.

It’s a non-competitive ride, so the point is to enjoy the route. Organizers recommend tires at least 32 mm wide, and helmets are required.

Advance registration has closed, but event-day registration is $40, cash only. Arrive during the 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. check-in window. The ride goes ahead rain or shine.

🦃 Turkey dinner without the cooking

Saturday, October 3 | 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. or 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
The Blue Door Bakery & Cafe, 5 Concession Street South, Tamworth

Thanksgiving dinner is getting an early start at the Blue Door. Its buffet includes roast turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, vegetables and the usual trimmings, followed by a dessert table, coffee and tea.

Adults: $39.95 plus HST, with gratuity included. Children ages 6–12 are $17.95, and children under 6 eat free.

Check availability and choose your seating: lunch or dinner.

Saturday, October 3 | 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Market Square, downtown Napanee

This is the final date on the Chamber’s 2026 Market Saturdays schedule. Make one more stop for seasonal produce, baking, preserves and locally made goods before the market wraps up for the year.

Sunday, October 4 | 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
W.J. Henderson Community Centre, 322 Amherst Drive, Amherstview

The 50th-anniversary celebration we flagged last week is here. There’ll be live music, a makers market, activities and a barbecue fundraiser hosted by the Amherstview Jets.

Free public swimming and skating run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. No registration is required, but capacity is limited. The ribbon-cutting ceremony begins at 10:30 a.m.

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT

📚 Meet Cathy Lynn Brooks, an author and new Amherstview neighbour

Amherstview author Cathy Lynn Brooks with Not My Story to Tell

Cathy Lynn Brooks recently moved to Amherstview, and there’s something she’d like her new neighbours to know: she’s an author whose books span memoir, fiction and children’s stories.

After her daughter, Justine, died in a car accident, Cathy began writing about her life. That writing became Not My Story to Tell, followed by the sequel JUSTINE.

Her work also includes the novel Rose-Coloured Houses and three children’s books inspired by her 12-year-old Shih Tzu, Boo, and her grandsons, Oliver and Elliott. Among them is the memorably titled I Can’t Sleep with a Dog on My Head. Anyone who shares a home with an affectionate dog may recognize the predicament.

Cathy spent more than 30 years as an educational assistant and describes helping others as a lifelong commitment. Her books offer her new neighbours another way to get to know her.

Her books are available on Amazon.ca. She also hopes to take part in local Christmas craft fairs, giving readers a chance to meet her in person.

🏡 HOUSE OF THE WEEK

204 Robert Street, Napanee

A front porch, a deep backyard and a layout with a little more flexibility than you might expect. This detached home has two bedrooms in the main house and a separate one-bedroom in-law suite at the rear.

The property sits on a 58-by-165-foot lot, with separate driveways and a location close to schools, parks and downtown amenities.

Why it stood out: A detached Napanee home below $400,000 with two distinct living spaces. The rear suite is currently tenanted, so that’s an important detail to discuss with the listing agent when considering how the property could work for you.
